For my 26th birthday, I wanted to celebrate the end of covid and my move to NY in a big way. So I created a birthday around the theme of fortune telling and horoscopes, using that as an ice breaker to connect people after covid and in differents parts of my life.
The dinner was held at Mission Chinese in Bushwick which took Chinese food into the future, with neon lighting shiftng colors by the second, shiny metal tables, elementary school chairs. It transported you to a modern day fortune teller shop.
The table setting combined different textures, new and old. Plastic and fortune cookie, bright pink and hand written words. It was tactile, and interactive. with personalized fortune cookies, descriptions of their Chinese horoscope type, and table seating that matched people through type. From water to wood to fire to earth to metal and back to water, each element each person supporting one another full circle.
For the invites, I took inspiration from Mission Chinese’s aesthetic and brought in neon colors into my design, and slow motion to add mystic and allure.
To capture the moment, I used my iPhone camera, using flash and motion blur intermittently against the everchanging lights in the space.
